Participants who have completed this course will be able to

  • Provide first aid skills to administer effective first aid in the workplace.

  • Deal with first aid emergencies, assess and treat injuries and illnesses.

  • Maintain care and comfort to the patient until medical treatment can be provided.

  • To comply with occupational Health and Safety Legislation.   

 

Overview of Course

    This QQI (formally FETAC) Module is designed to provide the learner with the skills and knowledge to provide first aid for life threatening injuries or illnesses and provide basic first aid.

    This is a mandatory module of the National Vocational Certificate in Community Care, in Childcare Studies, and in Security Studies and an elective module for 25 other National Vocational Certificate Courses, details of which can be found in the QQI directory of awards or from http://www.qqi.ie/.

    This course is also recognised by the Health and Safety Authority for the workplace.

     

    Preferred Entry Level and Entry Requirements 

      A good working knowledge of English, a Level 4 Certificate, a Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualification(s) and/or relevant life and work experience.

      There are no special requirements.

       

      Who should attend?

      People who wish to become Occupational First Aiders and comply with Chapter 2 of Part 7 of The General Application Regulations 2007

       

      Course Content

      • Unit 1: First Aid in the workplace.

      • Unit 2: Patient assessment

      • Unit 3: Respiratory emergencies

      • Unit 4: Cardiac First Response

      • Unit 5: Wounds and bleeding

      • Unit 6: Altered levels of consciousness

      • Unit 7: Musculoskeletal injuries

      • Unit 8: Burns, scalds, poisons, chemicals and electric shock

       

      Assessment

        1. Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation/Automated External Defibrillation (practical test) - 40%

        2. Short Answer Exam/22 questions (20 to be attempted) - 20%

        3. One first aid practical assessment for an injury - 20%

        4. One first aid practical assessment for an illness - 20%

        Pass mark for certification 50% for each assessment

         

        Certification

        Occupational First Aid QQI Level 5 Component Certificate. 

        This course qualifies as a component certificate and counts as 1 credit towards QQI (Level 5) Certificates. It is a recognised module within the NFQ.

        An Occupational First Aid Certificate is valid for 2 years.

        A one day Occupational First Aid refresher course must be taken every two years to remain in certification.
